2

Area

Area means the space inside.

Formula to find the area of a square and a rectangle is the same.

Area = length x width ( l x w)

3

A rectangular price tag is 7 centimeters tall and 10 centimeters wide. What is its area?

Area = length x width

Length = 7 cm

Width = 10 cm

l x w = 7 x 10 = 70 square cm.

Always remember to put the unit. Unit of area is always written as square units

4

Each side of a square mirror is 6 feet long. What is the mirror's area?

Area = length x width

Here length = 6 feet

As it is a square, all sides will be equal and so width will be the same as the length

Area = l x w

6 x 6= 36 square feet.

5

Multiple Choice

A rectangular concrete patio is 10 meters wide and 14 meters long. What is its area?

1

140 m

2

1400 m

3

140 sq. m

4

1400 sq.m

6

Multiple Choice

Each side of a square plastic tarp is 11 meters long. What is the tarp's area?

1

111 square meters

2

121 square meters

3

111 meters

4

141 square meters

7

Perimeter

Perimeter is the distance or measurement around a shape.

Perimeter of a square = 4 S ( S stands for one side. Square has all 4 sides equal)

Perimeter of a rectangle= 2l + 2w ( l stands for length and w stands for width)

8

Each side of a square coffee shop is 7 meters long. What is the coffee shop's perimeter?

Perimeter of a square = 4 S

S here is 7 cm

4S = 4 x 7 = 28 cm

9

A rectangular folder is 13 inches long and 8 inches wide. What is its perimeter?

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2l + 2w

length is given as 13 inches

width is given as 8 inches

So 2l + 2w = (2 x 13) + (2x 8)

2 x 13 = 26

2 x 8 = 16

26 + 16 = 42inches

10

Multiple Choice

What will be the perimeter of a rectangular table that is 12 m long and 5 m wide?

1

13

The perimeter of a square piece of gold is 24 millimeters. How long is each side?

Perimeter of a square = 4S

4S is given as 24 millimeters

So S = 24/ 4 = 6 mm

14

Mike built a rectangular dog pen that is 21 feet long and has a perimeter of 78 feet. What is the width of Mike’s dog pen?

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2l + 2w

2l + 2w = 78 feet

Length is given as 21 feet

So 2x21 + 2w = 78 feet

42 + 2w = 78 feet

2w = 78 - 42 = 36 feet

2w= 36. So w = 36/2 = 18 feet
