Energy sources

  • The world's energy needs includes electricity, fuel, water

  • Energy sources can be categorised into two: primary sources and secondary sources

  • Some energy sources cannot be renewed and will run out one day, these are non-renewable energy sources

  • Some energy sources are abundant and can be replaced quickly after they are converted into the form of energy that we need. These are renewable energy sources

3

Multiple Select

Let's guess: Which ones are primary energy sources?

1

coal

2

oil

3

electricity

4

hydrogen gas

5

sunlight

4

Primary sources are sources that are readily available / can be used directly

  • Coal

  • Oil

  • Uranium

  • Wind

  • Water

  • Biomass

5

Secondary sources are sources that are produced by the primary sources

  • Electricity

  • Fuels; petrol/gasoline

  • Hydrogen gas

6

Primary energy converters

To produce secondary sources rom primary sources, we need to have primary energy converters.

For example

Power stations - convert coal into electricity

Refineries - produce petrol/gasoline

Solar cells - convert sunlight into electricity

Hyrogen gas production
