Summaries

• Summaries are a brief account of the main points of something.

• Main points can often be found in the plot pyramid.

When do we use summaries in everyday life?

What's your favorite television show or movie?

How would you get your friend to watch it?

Exposition

• The exposition of the story contains the introduction of characters, settings, and conflict.

• In "The Fox and the Crow," the exposition is, "a hungry fox meets a crow who is eating cheese."

Rising Action

• Rising action is the action that builds up to the climax.

• In "The Fox and the Crow," the rising action is when the fox is flattering the crow.

Climax

• The climax of the story is the most tense part of the story or when the story reaches its turning point.

• In "The Fox and the Crow," the climax is when the crow opens its beak up to sing.

• At that point in the story, everything changed for the fox.

Falling Action

• The falling action of the story are the events that follow the climax. The falling action shows the results of the climax.

• In "The Fox and the Crow," the falling action is the fox eating the cheese.

Resolution

• The resolution is the end of the story. The resolution wraps everything up.

• In "The Fox and the Crow," the resolution is when the fox walks away.

Theme

• The theme is the main idea in the story. You can often learn a lesson from it.

• What lesson did you learn from "The Fox and the Crow"?

• How do we know this is the theme?

• How can you apply this lesson to your life?
