CONDITIONALS

  • Are used to talk about real or unreal situations

  • There are different conditionals and for that there are different uses: zero, first, second and third conditionals

Zero conditional USES

  • This conditional is used to talk about situations that are always true. For example, general facts or scientific truths.

  • Ex: If you heat water, it boils

Zero conditional - FORMS

  • There are two parts in a conditional sentence: IF part + RESULT part

  • If you eat well, you feel good

    present simple + present simple

  • Also, it is possible to change the order:

    You feel good if you eat well

FORMS

Affirmative: (if + subject + verb + comma+ subject + verb)

If it rains, I get wet - I get wet if it rains


Negative: (if + subject + auxiliar + verb + comma + subject + auxiliar + verb)

If it doesn't rain, I don't get wet - I don't get wet if it doesn't rain


Question: (auxiliar + subject + verb + if + subject + verb + ?)

Do you get wet if it rains? - If it rains, do you get wet?

1. If you mix red and blue, you get purple.

2. If public transport is not efficient, people don't stop using their cars.

3. Plants die if they don't get enough water.

4. Water becomes a solid if you freeze it.

  • This conditional is used to talk about real possibilities in present and future.

  • Ex: If you study harder, you will pass the exam.

  • There are two parts in a conditional sentence: IF part + RESULT part

  • If you drink water, you will feel more relaxed

    present simple + future will

  • Also, it is possible to change the order:

    You will feel more relaxed if you drink water

If I were the president, I would help poor people


Negative: (if + subject + verb past + verb + comma + subject + wouldn't + verb)

If I found money on the street, I wouldn't return it


Question: (if + subject + verb past + comma + would + subject + verb +?)

If you were famous, what would you do?

  • Ex: If I found a lot of money, I would buy a house in Miami.
