Learning Objectives
To simplify expressions with one letter
To simplify expressions with different terms
To simplify expressions by multiplying terms
4
Simplifying Expressions - Recap Prior Knowledge
Summarise what fruit each person has.
How can we write our answer more efficiently?
What if Kelly, Amanda and Fred eat some fruit or buy some more fruit?
5
Simplifying Expressions
Simplifying Expressions means to write the expression in the shortest way possible - we call this collecting like terms.
We can collect together any terms which are just numbers or have the same letter by adding or subtracting.
*Remember when we do not write 1, for example we would write '1w' as just 'w'.

Multiple Choice
Simplify:
w + w + w
3w
3
w
0
8
Simplify:
w + w + w
Here we have three w's so we can write this as 3w
9
Multiple Choice
Simplify:
4x+2x+3x
10x
9x
11x
8x
10
Simplify:
4x+2x+3x
4x+2x+3x
x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x
= 9x
11
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
12
Simplify:
5x + 11x – 4x
5x + 11x – 4x
16x - 4x
12x
13
Multiple Choice
Simplify:
4a + 9 + a
5a + 9
14a
3a + 9
5a - 9
14
Simplify:
4a + 9 + a
4a + 9 + a
Collect the 'a's: 4a + a + 9
5a +9
15
Multiple Choice
Simplify
6x+7s-4x-6s-2x
7s-3x
2x-s
12x+13y

16
Simplify
6x+7s-4x-6s-2x
6x+7s-4x-6s-2x
Collect the 'x's and the 's's together:
6x - 4x - 2x + 7s - 6s
0s + s
s
17
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
18
Simplify:
3x+7y+2x-y
3x+7y+2x-y
Collect the like terms:
3x + 2x + 7y - y (*remember y means 1y)
5x + 6y
19
Multiple Choice
Simplify:
x2+2−1+6x2−4x2
x 2 -1
x2 +1
3x2 +1
x 2+3
20
Simplify:
x2+2−1+6x2−4x2
x2+2−1+6x2−4x2
Collect the like terms:
x2 + 6x2 - 4x2 + 2 - 1
3x2 +1

Simplifying Expressions - Multiplying
To multiply terms in an expression: we multiply the numbers, then we multiply the letters.
Example: 2 x y x w x 3
2x3xyxw
6wy
*remember, it is expected that you will write the number in front of the letters and the letters will be in alphabetical order

27
Simplify
8 x g
When we multiply terms in algebra we do not write the times sign,
8 x g = 8g
28
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
29
Simplify
2 x f x h
When we multiply terms in algebra we do not write the times sign,
2 x f x h = 2fh
we write the letters in alphabetical order
30
Multiple Choice
Simplify 2b x b
4b
3b
2b2
4
31
Simplify 2b x b
When we multiply a letter by itself it becomes squared.
2b x b = 2b2
32
Multiple Choice
Simplify: 4b2 x 3c
b12c2
7b2c
12 x bc
12b2c
33
Simplify: 4b2 x 3c
when we have numbers in separate terms like in this example we multiply the numbers as normal.
4b2 x 3c = 12b2c
34
Multiple Choice
Simplify 2b x 3b x 2t
12bbt
7b2t
12b2t
6b x 2t
35
Simplify 2b x 3b x 2t
2b x 3b x 2t = 12b2t
36
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
37
Simplify:
3a x 2b x 4c
3a x 2b x 4c = 24abc
38
Multiple Select
The answer is
abc
Select all the possible questions
a x bc
a x b x c
a + b + c
a x a x c
39
The answer is
