Learning Objectives - Solving Linear Equations

  • Bronze: To solve one step Equations

  • Silver: To solve basic two step equations

  • Gold: To solve equations in context

3

Solving Linear Equations

To solve Linear Equations means to find the value of the letter.

To solve an equation we need to use the inverse operations.

These are: add <=> subtract and multiply <=> divide.

Multiple Choice

Solve:

x + 12 = 20

1

x = 32

2

x = -32

3

x = 8

4

x = -8

6

x + 12 = 20

  • subtract 12 from both sides

  • x + 12 - 12 = 20 -12

  • x = 8

7

Multiple Choice

5. 6b = 30

1

x = 36

2

x = 24

3

x = 180

4

x = 5

8

6b = 30

  • divide both sides by 6

  •  6b6=306\frac{6b}{6}=\frac{30}{6}

  • b = 5

9

Multiple Choice

What is the opposite operation of addition?

1

subtraction

2

multiplication

3

division

4

square root

10

What is the opposite operation of addition?

  • To solve an equation we need to use the inverse operations.

  • These are: add <=> subtract

11

Multiple Choice

What is the opposite operation of multiplication?

1

addition

2

subtraction

3

division

4

square root

12

What is the opposite operation of multiplication?

  • To solve an equation we need to use the inverse operations.

  • These are: multiply <=> divide.

13

Multiple Choice

Which equation has x = 5 as the solution?
1
x + 15 = 10
2
2x = 5
3
2x = 10

14

Which equation has x = 5 as the solution?

  • 2x = 10

  •  2xx=102\frac{2x}{x}=\frac{10}{2}

  • x = 5

15

Multiple Choice

What is the first step in solving for w in the equation 3w + 5 = 14?

1

Add 5 to both sides of the equal sign

2

Divide by 3 on both sides of the equal sign

3

Subtract 5 from both sides of the equal sign

4

Multiply by 3 on both sides of the equal sign

16

What is the first step in solving for w in the equation 3w + 5 = 14?

  • we always add or subtract to get rid of the number before multiplying or dividing by the coefficient of x

17

Multiple Choice

4x + 1 = 21

1

x=120

2

x=5

3

x=30

4

x=-5

18

4x + 1 = 21

  • 4x + 1 -1 = 21 -1

  • 4x = 20

  •  4x4=204\frac{4x}{4}=\frac{20}{4}

  • x = 5

19

Fill in the Blank

Solve:

2x + 5 = 12

20

Solve:

2x + 5 = 12

  • 2x + 5 -5 = 12 - 5

  • 2x = 7

  •  2x2 = 72\frac{2x}{2}\ =\ \frac{7}{2}

  • x = 3.5

21

Fill in the Blank

Solve:

3(x - 2) = 18

22

Solve:

3(x - 2) = 18

  • Expand first

  • 3x - 6 = 18

  • 3x - 6 +6 = 18 +6

  • 3x = 24

  •  3x3 = 243\frac{3x}{3}\ =\ \frac{24}{3}

  • x = 8
