7

Used to Vs Would

8

Main Difference – Used to vs Would

Used to and would describe actions, situations, and events that happened in the past. Although these two verbs can be used interchangeably in some cases, there are some differences between the two.

The main difference between used to and would is that used to can be used with both action verbs and stative verbs whereas would is only used with action verbs.

9

USED TO

Repeated actions in the past

We can use used to + infinitive to talk about things that we did repeatedly in the past.

When I was a child, I used to go skiing every winter.

From the age of 12 till I was 16, I used to dance at weekends.

Situations or states that are no longer true

We can use used to + infinitive to talk about situations or states (stative verbs) which were true in the past, but they are no longer true.

As a child I used to be blond.

I used to live with my mum when I was a child.

10

WOULD

Repeated actions in the past

We can also use would + infinitive to talk about things that we did repeatedly in the past.

When I was a child, we would go to the shopping centre every Saturday.

My 5th grade teacher would tell me to shut up at the beginning of every class.

Situations or states that are no longer true

We cannot use would to talk about situations or states (stative verbs) which are not longer true.

I used to be blond as a child. (NOT I would be blond as a child.)

I used to live with my mum when I was a child. (NOT I would live with my mum.)

  • It is also important to notice that when you are using would to indicate the past, the time period or the situation should always be established. For example, ‘we would go camping’ has no definite meaning as it doesn’t indicate the time clearly. But, ‘Every summer, we would go camping’ makes more sense since it indicates the time.

  • You might have also noticed that used to is the more familiar and commonly used word out of these two. Would, in this sense, is not much used in the spoken context since it sounds a bit formal.

12

Hints

  • Used to can be used with both action verbs and stative verbs.

Would is only used with action verbs.

  • Used to can be used without establishing a time period.

Would cannot be used without establishing a time period.

  • Used to is more casual and is used in everyday speech.

Would is a little formal and polite than used to.
