To express regrets about the past, we can use three structures:


1. Subject + wish + subject + past perfect + complement

*I wish I hadn't seen the theft.


MORE EXAMPLES:

-I ate a lot of food yesterday, now I have stomach ache!



- I slept late yesterday, now I'm sleepy :(

2. If only + subject + past perfect (HAD AND PAST PARTI)+ complement

*If only he had decided not to steal things from the store!

MORE EXAMPLES

- She wants a video game that saw in the store, but she didn't bought it


- I didn't know dogs could smell money


3, Subject + shouldn't have + past participle + complement

*He shouldn't have stolen from the store

MORE EXAMPLES:

- The police arrested the wrong person


- I left my country without telling anyone

*Use needn't have + past participle to say something that happened was innecessary .

**He needn't have stolen anything. He has a lot of money


MORE EXAMPLES:

- I didn't need to steal the money



- Diego have a lot of food, but he stole his brother's hamburguer.
