Passive Voice

  • The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence.

  • Sally slices the onions thinly

  • (Active)

  • The onions are sliced thinly by Sally

  • (Passive)

Discussion

  • Who is the subject in the first sentence ?

  • What is the Verb in the sentence?

  • What is the object in the sentence?

  • (Subject + Verb + Direct Object / Indirect Object)

  • To convert active to passive voice- switch the places of the subject and object

  • Subject goes to back and object goes to the front

Example sentences

  • When I was visiting Paris, somebody bumped into me.

  • Change the underlined sentence to passive voice sentence

  • Somebody = Subject

  • Bumped = Verb

  • Me = Object

  • Answer : I was bumped into
