What is Cultural Shock?

The term culture or cultural shock refers to feelings of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people experience when they are moved into a different society.

The 4 Stages of Culture Shock

  • The honeymoon stage: In this stage, people are fascinated to be in their new environment.

  • The irritation stage: In this stage, fatigue sets in with the misunderstanding of others' actions or conversation, ways of doing things.

  • The recovery stage: In this stage, once the frustration and feelings of anger decrease, people will start to adjust to their new surroundings.

  • The integration stage: At this stage, travelers have gained the familiarity they need to feel more comfortable with life in a foreign society.
