subordinating conjunction is a word or phrase that links a dependent clause to an independent clause. This word or phrase indicates that a clause has informative value to add to the sentence's main idea, signaling a cause-and-effect relationship or a shift in time and place between the two clauses.

Before I had my first job.....

  • All clasues require a subject and a verb.

  • A time clause is dependent clause. It can't stand alone; it must be connected to a main clause.

  • The time clause can come before or after the main clause.

  • When the time clause comes before the main clause, a comma separates the two clauses.

once/as soon as

  • When one event happens, another event happens soon afterward.

  • A particular point of time when two events happen together.

  • Example:

  • The moment John got married, he felt like an adult.

10

Until

  • To that time and then no longer.

  • Example:

  • Until I met Donna, I hadn't known what friendship was.

11

by the time

  • One event is completed before another event.
