6

THERM

comes from Greek, where it has the meaning "heat.''

7

Open Ended

Think or find 3 words that have the root "therm" in them.

8

Thermal Energy

If you heat something up, it gets hot. We say is has a thermal energy store

The hotter it is, the more energy it is storing

Thermal Energy

  • First they put large stones in the fire

  • The stones become very hot, they store a lot of thermal energy

  • Then, they put the hot stones in the water. The water becomes hot. The thermal energy of the stones spreads to the water

  • They cook the meat for many hours in the boiling water

If you heated one big stone, and one small stone in a fire, which would store more energy? Why?

11

Thermal energy escaping

  • A good energy store is one that stores energy for a long time until it is needed

  • A battery can store energy for years

  • The energy in petrol or gas has been stored for millions of years

  • Thermal energy stores are not like that. Their energy spreads out into the surroundings

What happens to the temperature of an object as thermal energy spreads out from it?

13

Open Ended

Energy spreading out from very, very far away, keeps the Earth warm. What is this object?

14

Thermal energy travels through different materials at different speeds

  • Materials that are good conductors of thermal energy (heat spreads quickly) are called thermal conductors.

  • Materials that are poor conductors of thermal energy (heat spreads slowly) are called thermal insulators.

Multiple Choice

Heat can be transferred from one material to another?
1
False
2
True

18

Multiple Choice

Heat will always flow from
1
from warmer object to a cooler object
2
inside and object to outside an object
3
from a cooler object to a warmer object
4
up to down

19

Multiple Choice

When holding a cup of ice water, your warm hand becomes cold. How does the heat transfer?
1
From the cold cup to your hand
2
From the cold cup to the warm air
3
From the ice to your hand
4
From your warm hand to the cold cup.

Heat transfers from an area of ____temperature to an area of ___ temperature.

1

high to low

2

low to high

3

high to high

4

It can travel high to low and low to high.

21

Multiple Choice

Conductors are materials that...
1
Allow heat to pass through
2
Stop heat from passing through
3
Allow cold to pass through
4
Stop cold from passing through

22

Multiple Choice

What is one type of good conductor?

1

Most plastics

2

Most fruits

3

Most wood products

4

Most metals

23

Multiple Choice

Why do you want to live in a home with good insulation during the cold winter months?
1
The insulation will keep you cool during winter.
2
If there is good insulation, the thermal energy will not be able to move easily from inside the warm home to the cool areas outside the building.
3
If there is not good insulation, the air inside the home will become too hot.
4
A house with good insulation will keep the warm air in the attic.

Multiple Choice

Question image
11. Pans A & B shown above have been on a hot stove for 10 minutes. Pan A has a metal handle and pan B has a plastic-coated handle. Which handle  would be hotter?___________ Why?_________________
1
Pan A because the metal is a conductor of heat.
2
Pan B because there is an insulator on the pan.
3
Pan A because there metal is an insulator.
4
Pan B because the metal conducts heat.
