Magnetic poles

2
Magnetic Poles
Magnets attract magnetic materials
There is a magnetic force that pulls on a piece of steel when a magnet attracts it
Magnetic forces are strongest at the two ends of the magnet
These ends are called magnetic poles
Why do the magnets have the letters 'n' and 's'?
3
Magnetic Poles
If you hang a magnet so it is free to turn around, it will turn until one end (magnetic pole) points north, and the other points south
The north pole points north
The south pole points south
4
Two magnets
The diagram shows what happens when poles of two magnets are near each other
They can attract or repel each other (push each other away)
The green arrows show the direction of the magnetic force
5
Magnet rules
Like poles repel
Unlike poles attract
Like poles = both north poles or both south poles
Unlike poles = one north and one south pole
Sometimes people remember the rules with the expression: 'opposites attract'
