A traditional Malay house is built of timber. Rattan and tree roots are used to tie up joints. Bamboo and leaves are used for floors and walls. The roof is steep and it is elevated to cater for the monsoon rain season. In some places, flood occurs after heavy rains. In order to solve this problem, some houses are built on timber stilts to avoid flood water from overflowing into the houses.
