First Bulgarian kingdom

The first Bulgarian state (in Old Bulgarian: цьрьство бл︢гарское), called by historians and Danube Bulgaria to distinguish it from Volga Bulgaria, was originally a khanate, and since the coronation of Simeon I the Great as king - kingdom (empire), existed on The Balkan Peninsula and its adjacent parts of Southeast Europe from 681 to 1018.

• Its founder was Khan Asparuh, who after the disintegration of Greater Bulgaria brought part of the proto-Bulgarian tribes to today's Bessarabia and Dobrudja, where he allied with the local Slavic tribes.

• The categorical victory of the proto-Bulgarians in the battle of Ongala in 680 led to the signing of a peace treaty, by which Byzantium de facto recognized the newly created state and was forced to pay taxes to it.The capital was originally Pliska, and from the IX century - Veliki Preslav. After its conquest by Kievan Rus at the end of the 10th century, it moved to Skopje and Ohrid.
