Points, Lines, and Angles

2

Points and Planes

A point is a single location in a space. We assign a name to a point by writing a letter next to it. A plane is a collection of points that extends to form a flat surface.

In the drawing, point A lies on plane P.

3

Lines

Much of your work in geometry will be concerned with lines and angles. A line is a straight pathway of points that extend indefinitely in two directions. A line may be named by a single letter or by two points on the line.

4

Rays and Line segments

A ray is a part of a line that begins at an endpoint and extends indefinitely in one direction. A portion of a line with two endpoints is called a line segment. Both rays and line segments are named using two points.

5

Angles

When two rays share an endpoint, they form an angle. The shared endpoint is the vertex of an angle. An angle can be named in different ways: by a number written in degrees inside the angle, by the vertex, or by the points on the angle.

6

Right Angles

  • This angle measures 90 degrees

  • Can be identified by a small square inside the angle.

Slide image

7

Acute Angles

  • These angles measure LESS than 90 degrees

Slide image

8

Obtuse Angles

  • These angles measure MORE than 90 degrees

  • But LESS than 180 degrees

Slide image

9

Straight Angles

  • These angles measure exactly 180 degrees

Slide image

10

Reflex Angle

  • This angle measure MORE than 180 degrees

  • But LESS than 360 degrees

  • Remember: This is not an upside-down obtuse angle. Look for the angle indicator.

Complimentary, Supplementary, and Conjugate Angles

  • Complimentary: When two angles = 90 degrees

  • Supplementary: When two angles = 180 degrees

  • Conjugate: When two angles = 360 degrees
