In Great Britain both Hadrian and Antoninus Pius built defences to protect the province of Britannia from the Caledonians. 

The Hadrian's Wall was constructed in 122;

the Antonine Wall was constructed between 142 and 144.

To control their territory in England, the Romans built a long wall to protect Roman England from the tribes who live in Scotland. Hadrian's Wall was built so well, that you can see parts of it today, nearly 2000 years after it was made.

It was 117 kilometers long. There were turrets at regular intervals from which soldiers can watch the land.

Hadrian

Hadrian is born in Rome in A.D. 76. He becomes Emperor of Rome. Hadrian comes to visit Britain in A.D. 122. His mission is to defend the northern Roman Empire. It is during this visit that he orders the construction of the wall called Hadrian’s Wall.

Roman cities

Every town with the name ending in “CHESTER” OR “CESTER” OR “CASTER” is a Roman town. The word CHESTER comes from Castrum, the Roman camp. The most famous Roman cities are: Londinium, Colchester, St.Albans, Dorechster.

What do the Romans call Londinium?

The Romans call London 'Londinium'. The River Thames is a quick way to transport goods between Britain and the Continent. The Romans see this and built the town of Londinium around the river's main crossing point.
