Job vs Career

Career education is different than job education.

Let’s learn how they’re different and why you may want a career instead of a job.

People with jobs may:

  • Not need advanced education or training.

  • Have an hourly wage, where they are paid a set amount of money per hour that they work.

  • Have less job security and fewer benefits.

  • Have special skills or training for their work

  • Get promotions or move up in their field of work.

  • Get paid a salary, which means getting a set amount of money per year rather than per hour.

  • Get benefits like health insurance, paid vacations, or paid sick leave.

Organizing Career Fields, Clusters and Pathways

Career Field: Broad categories that include different types of jobs and careers

Career Cluster: Occupations in the same field of work that require similar skills

Career Pathway: Outlines the positions, salary, and training required to advance in an industry

  • Business, Management, & Administration

Thinking about Career Education

Livingston High School allows you to begin vocational career and technical education.

You can find Career Technical Education pathways and classes on your class sign-up form.

If you are able and dedicated, you can go to a local vocational school or community college while you’re still in high school.

Types of Postsecondary Schools

​Vocational-Technical Schools and Programs:

-offer education and training that is specifically targeted to specialized areas

Community​/Junior Colleges:

-you can earn earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or an Applied Science (AAS) degree

-​you may transfer credits to a four-year college or university

Four-year Colleges and Universities:

-students can earn bachelor’s degrees by successfully completing the degree program

-four-year colleges and universities also have graduate and professional schools in order to earn a master’s, specialist’s, and/or doctoral degree(s)
