Evaluate Expressions

Evaluate an Expression: you have to substitute a number for each variable and perform the arithmetic operations.

 Steps to Evaluate an Expression

1. Substitute the values given for the variables (use parentheses!)

2. Simplify the Expression

   (remember Order of Operations!)

Example 1

Evaluate: (4n + 6) - 4 for n = 1

Example 2

Evaluate 2x² + 3x for x = 8

Example 3

Evaluate -3(x + 4)² - 9 for x = -6
