Passive Voice

There are two voices in English: the active (real) voice and the passive (passive) voice.

• Active Voice is a grammatical construction that shows that the action in a sentence is performed by the subject.

  
  

• Example: His parents love him. – Его любят родители. .

• Example: I did my homework yesterday. – Я сделал свое домашнее задание вчера.

• Passive voice (Passive Voice) is a grammatical construction that shows that the subject (who? What?) does not perform the action on its own, but experiences the action on itself, is the object of the action. The one (that), over whom (what) the action is performed, is called the passive subject.

  
  

• Example: He is loved by his parents. – Он любим родителями.

• Example: My homework was done by me yesterday. – Мое домашнее задание было выполнено мной вчера.

• The passive voice is formed with the help of the auxiliary verb to be and the Past Participle form (a semantic verb in the third form).

  
  

• The passive voice is used in several tenses, and for each of the tenses the auxiliary to be has its own special form. The passive voice is not used in the times of the Perfect Continuous group and in the Future Continuous.

  
  

Affirmative sentence

• To form a passive voice in an affirmative sentence, you need an object over which the action is performed, an auxiliary verb to be in the appropriate tense and a third form of a semantic verb (Past Participle).

  
  

• Example: My lunch is eaten by my dog. – Мой обед съеден моей собакой.

• Example: This mission was successfully completed. – Эта миссия была успешно выполнена.

• Example: The parcel will be delivered tomorrow morning. – Посылка будет доставлена завтра утром.

Negative sentence

• For a negative sentence with a passive voice, it is necessary to put the negative particle not after the auxiliary verb in the desired temporal and personal form.

  
  

• Example: This article is not written by Jane. – Эта статья не написана Джейн.

• Example:I was not informed about this concert. – Меня не проинформировали об этом концерте.

• My project won’t have been finished till Monday. – Мой проект не будет завершен к понедельнику.

  In order to create a general question in the passive voice, it is necessary to render the auxiliary verb in the desired temporal and personal form before the Passive Subject (passive subject)

• Example: Are you punished? – Ты наказан?

• Example: Will the parcel be delivered soon? – Скоро будет доставлена посылка?

Object question

• When will the package be brought? – Когда принесут посылку?

• How often was the package brought? – Как часто приносили посылку?

Usage

• Absence of a performer

  When the person who does the action is not important, not known, or obvious from the context.

• I was robbed three weeks ago. – Меня ограбили три недели назад. (Мы не знаем, кем был грабитель.)

• My meal has just been prepared at the restaurant. – Мою еду только что приготовили в ресторане. (Очевидно, что действие совершил повар.)

• Adverse events

  The window was broken. – Окно разбилось.

• The article has been written awfully. – Статья написана ужасно.

• She is not mentioned at this list. – Её нет в этом списке.

Action is more important than the performer

• 80-year-old man was robbed near his apartment door yesterday. – Вчера восьмидесятилетнего мужчину ограбили прямо у двери его квартиры. (Новостной заголовок.)

• The milk is put to the specific container where it’s boiled at 100 degrees Centigrade. – Молоко помещают в специальную емкость, где оно кипятится при 100 градусах по Цельсию. (Описание технологического процесса.)

Impersonal constructs

• My friends believe that John crashed the car. – Мои друзья верят, что Джон разбил машину.

• John is believed to have crashed the car. – Все думают, что Джон разбил машину.
