Let's study this!

When we are talking in the present tense, you may hear a sentence like this:

9

Person 1: Is there a hat on my head?

Person 2: Yes, there is.

  • .

10

We use "is there" and "there is" to describe things that are happening in the present tense. "There is" is used to describe a singular object (in this example, a hat).

  • "Is there" is asked to ask a question, for example:

  • "Is there a hat on my head?"

  • "There is" is used to answer a question, or to say a fact, for example:

  • "Yes, there is".

11

We use "are there" and "there are" to describe things that are happening in the present tense. "There are" is used to describe more than one object (in this example, some sharks).

  • "are there" is asked to ask a question, for example:

  • "are there sharks in the water?"

  • "There are" is used to answer a question, or to say a fact, for example:

  • "Yes, there are".

12

We do not use the same words if we are talking about something that happened in the past:

13

"There is" becomes "there was".

"Is there" becomes "was there".

  • .

14

Example:

Person 1: "Was there a cake at home"?

Person 2: "Yes, there was".

  • .

15

"There are" becomes "there were".

"are there" becomes "were there".

  • .

16

Example:

Person 1: "Were there a lot of people at home"?

Person 2: "Yes, there were".

  • .

17

Now, let's practice!

Answer the questions correctly.
