• Consonants: Sounds which are made with some obstruction to the airflow in the oral cavity

How many consonants are there in English ?

• There are 24 consonants

• 9 voiceless sounds: p, t, k, f, θ, s, ʃ, tʃ, h

• 15 voiced sounds: b, g, d, v, ð, z, ʒ, dʒ, m, n, ŋ, l, r, j, w

Refers to how the air stream from the lungs is directed to the mouth and modified bt the various structures to produce a consonant 

example

• maker

  two syllables “mak”: two consonants “m” “k” plus one vowel “a” “er”: one vowel “e” plus one consonant “r”

• slow

  one syllable three consonants “s” “l” “w” and one vowel “o”
