Give learners 10 minutes to answer the Getting started questions in their exercise books. After 10 minutes, ask learners to swap their books with a partner and check their partner’s answers as you discuss the questions as a class.

• Words that will be used: decimal, decimal place, decimal point, decompose, place value.

• Ask and explain the meaning of these terms.

• Show a place-value chart. 

• Ask learners to describe the grid.

100 to 900 going across. Divide by 10 each time you move down a row.

Now ask learners to complete questions 1 to 4 of Exercise 1.1 in the Learner’s Book.

Differentiation ideas: Support less confident learners by pairing them with a more confident learner who is willing to help them.
