CONURBATION

Term coined by PATRICK GEDDES in his book CITIES IN EVOLUTION (1915).

A polycentric contiguous/continuous urban or industrially developed area comprising a number of metropolises, cities, large towns, and other urban areas.

Usually, transportation links are developed to connect different labour markets/work areas.

OTHER EXAMPLES OF CONURBATIONS: TOKYO, NEW YORK, SAO PAULO (Brazil)

18

URBAN SPRAWL

Urban sprawl can be defined as urban development with low-density housing, both residential and commercial, segregated land-use, high level of automobile use combined with lack of public transport, which is in high demand for land (Johnson, 2001).

It is the unrestricted use of urban areas over large expanses of land with little concern for urban planning.

INFILL

In urban planning, infill is the reclamation of land in an urban environment to new construction.

It is also called LAND RECYCLING.

It is a solution for economical use of existing infrastructure and remedy for urban sprawl.

In developing countries, it is a solution for SMART GROWTH.

24

METROPOLIS

From the Green word 'MOTHER CITY'.

It is a large city, which is a significant economic, political and cultural center for a country or region.

It is characterised by a densely populated urban core and less-populated surrounding territories under the same administrative system.

Presence of a 'METRO' is key.

The most striking feature of urban development in India has been the significant growth of metropolitan cities as compared to small and medium sized towns.

E.G. TOP 5- Tokyo, Shanghai, Jakarta, Delhi and Seoul.

25

MEGALOPOLIS

  • Typically a chain of roughly adjacent metropolitan areas, i.e. a cluster of well-networked cities.

  • It is a large conurbation, where two or more large cities have sprawled outward to meet, forming something larger than a metropolis- a MEGA CITY.

  • MEGA CITIES are also called MILLION PLUS CITIES which are urban areas with more than 10 million population.

  • E.G. Mumbai-Pune-Nasik, Delhi-Gurgaon-Greater Noida.
