Solving algebraic equations is a lot like sorting money

How would you sort these coins?

Solving algebraic equations is a lot like sorting money

How would you sort these coins?

Would you start with the easy ones at the top or the hard ones at the bottom?

16

It's the same with equations

  • The goal is to put the x by itself on one side of the equal sign

  • When we do that, we SOLVED the problem.

17

How to isolate the variable

  • Find where the x is. (There may be multiple)

  • Use inverse operations to move items from one side of the equal sign to the next

18

2x + 9 = 11

19

3x + x - 2 = 18

20

 x5=15\frac{x}{5}=15

21

 x3=(1+x)\frac{x}{3}=\left(1+x\right)
