Division

Division is the repeated subtraction.

When equal amount or quantity is deducted(subtracted) several times,we use division.

2

Division has 4 parts.

  • Divisor:- The number that is being repeatedly subtracted is the divisor.

  • Dividend:- The total quantity from which subtraction is being repeatedly is the dividend.

  • Quotient:- The number of times subtraction can be done is the quotient.

  • Remainder:- The part left or which could not be further subtracted is the remainder.

3

Complete Division

For division to be complete i.e no remainder is left, the dividend should be a multiple of the divisor.

Eg. 5 x 9= 45

5 and 9 are factors of 45 i.e 45 appears in the tables of 5 and 9

so 45÷9=5 or 45÷5=9 as 45 is multiple of both 5 and 9 and no remainder will be left

4

Remainder

We get remainder only when the dividend is not a multiple of the divisor.

Eg:- 45÷6 so Quotient=7 as 6 x 7=42 and 3 will become the remainder.

5

Formula for Checking division

Dividend= Divisor x Quotient + Remainder(if any)

Eg:- 56÷6

Divisor= 6 Q=9 and R=2

Using formula Q x D + R

6 x 9 +2

54 + 2= 56
