Cells

2
Animal and Plant Cells
Objectives: By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
State the two basic types of cells. Identify 7 parts of a cell. State the functions of 7 cells parts.
3
Organelles
Tiny cell structures that carry out specific functions within the cell.
4
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like structure. Keeps all the organelles together in the cell. Where all chemical reactions take place.
5
Nucleus
'Brain' of the cell. Control all cell activities including reproducing new cells and repair worn out parts. Contains chromosomes that contains DNA.
6
Cell Wall
Layer of non living material that surrounds the cells of plants. Made up of cellulose.
Only in plant cells.
Gives plants it's shape. It helps protect and support the cell.
7
Cell Membrane
All cells have it. Partially permeable membrane surrounding cell. Controls movement of substance into and out of the cell.
8
Chloroplast
Only found in plant cells. Contains chlorophyll, that allows the cell to make its own food.
9
Vacuole
Storage of the cells: water, food, minerals, waste materials. Plants cells have one large vacuole (contains cell sap). Animal cells have many small and numerous vacuoles.

controls what goes in and out of the cell
contains DNA which controls the reactions inside the cell
19
Typical Cell Models
Based on typical cell models, we can determine whether an unknown cell shares the same characteristics as a typical plant or animal cell.
A new classification of living things was created for organisms that have characteristics of both plant and animal cells.
