• Gr 1: What is a fable? Is it fiction or non-fiction?

• Gr 2: Discuss what makes the story a fable?

• Gr 3: Discuss what these may be about:

  The Fox and the Crow, The Tortoise and the Hare, or The Lion and the Mouse?

Discuss the story in a group.

• The Ant and the Grasshopper. (Learners book page 12)

• Skim read the story silently to get the main idea.

• Read the story aloud in your group, one paragraph each.

Reading tip.

• When you don’t know what a word means, try these ideas:

• Break the word into syllables and look for a common root word, prefix or suffix.

• Re-read the word in context for extra clues.

• Use the dictionary.

• Fables are short stories.

• The characters usually have human characteristics.

• The main point is a moral lesson one of

  the characters learns.

• We can learn from the story’s lesson as well.

• Read/ narrate a story and ask learners to jot down points on why it can or cannot be classified as a fable based on their knowledge of fable features.
