Heat is a form of energy.

It cannot be seen and can only be felt.

Uses of Heat

• keeps us warm

• cooks our food

• dries our clothes

Temperature

• Measurement of how hot or cold and object is

• Unit of measurement: degree Celcius

Heat Transfer

• From a hotter object to a cooler object until both objects reach the same temperature.

• The temperature of the hotter object decreases.

• The temperature of the cooler object increases.

Insruments used to measure temperature

Heat flow diagrams

• The warmer surrounding air loses heat to the cooler ice cream.

• The cooler ice cream is said to gain heat.

• Heat flows from warmer surrounding air to the cooler ice cream.

The hot water loses heat to the ice.

The ice gains heat from the hot water. Heat flows from the hot water to the ice.

Good conductors of heat

• Allows heat to pass through it easily.

• Examples: iron, steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, silver, gold & mercury

Poor conductors of heat (Insulators)

• Do not allow heat to pass through it easily.

• Examples: wood, rubber, ceramics, fabric, plastic, glass.
