It means 'The'.

The alif in ٱل is always Hamzatul Wasl.


If ٱل comes in the start of an aayah, we will replace Hamzatul Wasl with fathah.


If ٱل comes in between aayah, we will drop the alif. The alif will NOT be pronounced.
