Properties of Matter

2

Objectives: Learners are expected to

  • Observe physical and chemical properties of matter

  • Describe the physical and chemical properties of matter

  • Classify materials based on its physical and/or chemical properties

  • Appreciate the importance of recognizing properties of matter in minimizing waste

3

Important Question to ask

Why is it important to know the properties of matter?

4

Previous lessons thought you about the properties of matter: mass and volume.

Other than that, there are several properties that makes each mater distinct from one another

5

Knowing their properties will let us know what it is made of.

This will help us decide whether a material is waste or still useful

6

The properties of materials can be classified as

  • Physical properties

  • chemical Properties

7

A characteristic of matter that can be readily observed without changing its composition is known as physical property.

A physical property can be identified by using the five senses or some measuring tools.

8

Some physical property are specific to each phase of material.

Liquids flow

Solids are known for hardness - some hard while others are soft

Gas are colorless and can be compressed

9

Multiple Select

Which of the following are Physical properties?

1

Hardness

2

Brittleness

3

13

Multiple Select

Which best describe brittleness?

1

when subject to compression or stress, it crumbles or break easily

2

a material that experiences very little or no permanent, non-recoverable deformation before it fractures or breaks

3

easily broken, cracked, or snapped

4

ability of material to resist wear, tear, scratching, abrasion cutting

14

Multiple Select

Which of the following are brittle materials?

1
2
3

15

Now open page 10 of your book and read through the 5 remaining physical properties.

Type in your answers on the questions that comes with the next slides.
