The English Imperative:
How to tell someone what to do!
29
Imperative (1)
Used to give instructions or directions.
Clear instructions allow people to follow what we want them to do.
Avoids confusion.
We must be clear and precise.
30
Bad Instructions
Unclear directions might cause someone to get lost.
A bad recipe may cause someone to set their house on fire.
A badly explained exercise might make you do the wrong thing.
31
How do we make it?
It's simple and easy!
We use the infinitive of the verb (unconjugated), and remove the 'to'.
E.g. Do the homework!
E.g. Take me on holiday!
E.g. Turn left on Sesame Street.
Tip:
Unless you are trying to be rude / offensive, you might want to say 'Please'.
Pick up the phone!
is not as polite as,
Pick up the phone, please.
32
Multiple Choice
What is the best instruction, using the imperative, to give to someone who is crying.
You can stop crying now.
Stop crying you crybaby!
Cheer up. You will feel better soon.
You should cook yourself dinner to stop thinking.
33
Open Ended
Using the imperative, what advice would you give to your friend who just found out their mum is a superhero called Captain Mumerica? Give at least one piece of advice. You can give more if you want.
34
Exercise
On the next slide, you will see a map. In a sequence of at least 5 steps, you should write directions from the red circle to the post office.
Finish with the sentence, "You will know you are at the post office when..."
Let's read the tip on Page 3 to help.
Reference points may include street names, traffic lights, other buildings or noticeable features (e.g. a bridge or a river).
