The English Imperative:

How to tell someone what to do!

29

Imperative (1)

  • Used to give instructions or directions.

  • Clear instructions allow people to follow what we want them to do.

  • Avoids confusion.

  • We must be clear and precise.

media

30

Bad Instructions

Unclear directions might cause someone to get lost.

A bad recipe may cause someone to set their house on fire.

A badly explained exercise might make you do the wrong thing.

media

31

How do we make it?

It's simple and easy!

We use the infinitive of the verb (unconjugated), and remove the 'to'.

E.g. Do the homework!

E.g. Take me on holiday!

E.g. Turn left on Sesame Street.

Tip:

Unless you are trying to be rude / offensive, you might want to say 'Please'.

Pick up the phone!

is not as polite as,

Pick up the phone, please.

media

32

Multiple Choice

1
