​WHAT IS A LEGEND?

A legend (derived from Latin, LAGENDA) is a ​traditional story or group of stories told about a particular person or place. Legends resemble folktales in content; they may include supernatural beings, elements of mythology, or explanations of natural phenomena, but they are associated with a particular locality or person and are told as a matter of history.

​It is a story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proved to be true.

​The poem 'A legend of the Northland' is a folktale that is passed from one generation to another in Northland. It is a story that revolves around Saint Peter and the little woman who was punished for her selfishness.
