Look at this text:
"For example, this week I am cooking nearly everyday. My mom usually cooks, but she's out on bussiness. Right now I am making some chicken salad for my lunch. My mom says lunch is the most important meal, so I don't skip it. I prefer home-made food. My co-workers are all getting fat because of fast food. Unfortunately, people are eating more unhealthily these days."
Grammar: Present simple and continuous, action and non-action verbs
11
Use the present simple
For activities that are normally true:
"I don't skip lunch"
For routines:
"My mom usually cooks lunch" (remember the s for he/she/it)
With:
Adverbs of frequency (always, usually, sometimes, never, etc.)
every day, night, week, month.
Once, twice a day, week, month, etc.
12
Use the present continuous
For activities happening now:
"Right now, I am making chicken salad for my lunch"
For temporary activities (for a period of time):
"This week, I am cooking nearly everyday" (until my mom comes back)
Activities in progress (over and over again):
"My co-workers are all getting fat because of fast food".
"People are eating more unhealthily these days"
with:
Today, now, right now, these days
13
Action verbs and nonaction verbs
Verbs that describe action (cook, make, eat, etc.) can be used in either, present simple or continuos:
"I am making lunch. I usually make lunch on weekends"
"I am eating chocolate because it's cold. I don't always eat chocolate"
"My girlfriend is cooking breakfast only because it is my birthday. She never cooks breakfast!"
Verbs that describe feelings or states (nonactions) (like, love, need, be, think, believe, remember, prefer, etc.) are expressed in present simple (most of times)
"I love sushi" not "I am loving sushi"
"I think fast food is bad" not "I am thinking fast food is bad"
"I prefer fish instead of meat" not "I am prefering fish instead of meat"
14
Action verbs and nonaction verbs
A few verbs have an action and nonaction meaning. For example, have and think.
"I have a Cat" = possession (nonaction)
"I can't talk now, I am having lunch" = an action
"I think fast food is not so bad" = opinion (nonaction)
"I'm thinking of eating out today" = an action
