“MUSICAL TEXTURE”

Texture is the element of music that refers to the layers of sound heard in a musical composition. Texture describes the quality of sound of a song in music. Musical texture may be described as thick, thin, heavy, or light. In this lesson you will learn the different kinds of texture and you will also learn how two or more independent melodic voices create beautiful harmonies. We must have a better understanding of the different textures used in music.

4

The three kinds of texture

Monophonic texture refers to the simplest pattern of musical composition with a single melodic line without accompaniment. It may be sung by an individual person or a group of people as long as there is a single musical voice and the same notes are performed in unison.

5

The three kinds of texture

Homophonic texture is a composition with a single melodic line accompanied by a musical instrument. The focus is given on the relationship of the main melody and on the accompaniment. Homophonic texture is the most common texture type heard in music with a melodic layer and a harmonic layer. It is the texture on which most music is based.

Polyponic Texture

When a musical composition is written in two or more independent melodic lines, a polyphonic texture is produced. It has a complex sound compared to monophonic or homophonic music. This kind of texture is frequently used in a canon or round, choral, instrumental ensemble, or orchestral music.
