The Scene...
- You are an English person in the year 1607. It is an exciting time for you. Your country is now a world leading country and has found a New World to explore!
You have read pamphlets and advertisements about the new world and how abundant its resources are. Your life in England does not offer much, so you decide you would have a better future by starting a colony in America.

Directions
-Everyone will start off with 20 points
-The goal of the game is to see if you survive your voyage to the New World and if your colony will be a success
-You will lose or gain points based off of the scenario that comes up
-Try to survive by not losing points. Your colony will be more or less successful based off of how many points you have remaining at the end of the game
-Read each slide and follow the directions on each
-Participate and have fun as we explore some of the real-life obstacles that people in the 1600s faced when coming to America!

Directions
The teacher will be using a randomizer to select who gets or loses points for each round to keep it fair, so....
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU WRITE DOWN OR REMEMBER YOUR CHOICES FOR THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS!
Also, if you cannot drop down to 0 points. If you lose so many points that you would drop to 0 points, stay in the game with 1 point.

Scene 1
The Captains

Delays
You are ready to board your ship and set out for adventure, but the captain of your ship overloaded the ship with too many passengers.
The trip slows down by 5 days
-5pts if your captain's number gets chosen

A Crooked Captain
It turns out the the captain of your ship is smuggling in goods to the New World. They have loaded the cargo hold with illegal goods and it slows down the speed of the ship. The trip is delayed 3 days.
-3 pts. if the number of your ship gets chosen

All "strapped" up
The captain of your ship has experienced this journey before. He knows that pirates could appear at any point in the journey and is not taking chances.
The captain adds extra cannons to his ship for protection.
+2pts if the number of your ship gets chosen

Boat Snack!
Your captain comes from a very wealthy family and so his ship is well stocked with food and supplies for the journey ahead!
+3pts if the number of your captain gets chosen

Scene 2
The Voyage

OUTBREAK!
There is an outbreak of cholera (a very bad disease) on your ship. 5 women, 3 children, and 2 men die.
-5 pts. if the number of your character gets chosen

A New Day Dawning
You have great sailing weather- your voyage is ahead of schedule by 3 whole days! You wish your family were here to see this, but some of them died in the cholera outbreak.
+2pts. if the number of your character gets chosen

MUTINY!
Many of the passengers are getting restless and agitated. They think that the captain is not any good at looking out for the passengers. A group of passengers decided to mutiny against the captain!
In the fighting, 3 men are killed and the mutiny fails.
-3pts if the number of your captain gets chosen

When it rains, it pours
Your ship encounters a very violent storm! You lose many horses and livestock as they fall overboard the ship amidst the towering, powerful waves!
-5pts. if the number of your ship is chosen

Oh, rats...
It looks like there are some unwanted guests joining your voyage....rats!
If only you would have thought to bring your cat with you....
-2pts if your ship's number gets chosen

If you eat food, it'd better be good
You have been eating food most days. You haven't felt hungry. But you do feel weak and sick. You thought it was the rocking of the ship making you seasick, but it turns out that you are not getting the nutrients you need to keep healthy.

You think to yourself, "When will be finally get to the New World?!"

Land!

"Sea" you later!
At last! You have arrived at your destination. You are alive, but you are also tired, scared, hungry, and on the other side of the world away from any help. But the only choice you have is survive!

Scene 4
The Natives

Let's Make A Deal!
You and the remaining survivors of your voyage have made a settlement in your colony. You start trading with the Natives there to help you get supplies. You make a great trade with them one day that doubles your food supply!
+5pts if the number of your destination is chosen

I get buy with a little help from my friends
You and the members of your colony successfully bribe the chief of one of the local Native tribes with a barrell full of gifts. In exchange, the cheif and his tribe agree to feed the members of your colony for the entire winter when food is usally very scarce!
+5pts if your destination number is chosen

Trouble in Paradise
The Native tribe that your colony has been collaborating with is now at war with another tribe and they expect you to help them. You are now caught in the middle of a war that you did not choose to get involved in.
The tribe you relate to through trade continues to support your colony, but the enemy tribe raids your settlement and kills 2 people.
-3pts. if the number of your destination is chosen

Peace in our time
Members of your settlement join with your allied tribe and successfully end the war between the tribes. To thank you for your sacrifice and help, the tribe gives you a month's supply of food for your colony!
+5pts if your destination number gets called

Final Scene

"Well where I come from..."
New arrivals from Europe come to live in your colony. They are very wealthy and powerful people in Europe and, so, when they arrive at your colony they do not accept the chosen leader of your colony because they are not from a wealthy family.
-4pts if your destination number is called

Imagine complaining and doing nothing about the problem...
Other settlers are not pleased with the way the government of your colony is functioning, but all they do is complain about it and it really bothers you.
-2pts if your character number gets chosen

Well that's one way to solve a problem...
The leader of your colony's government ends up getting chosen to continue as the leader by a very slim margin. Most people are upset about this. However, there is later a Native American raid on your settlement (again) and that leader is killed in the raid.
+2pts if your destination number is chosen

Moving on
A new leader is chosen to lead the colony.... and that newly chosen leader is YOU! You sucessfully lead your colonial goverment and most of the colony is satisfied with the job you are doing. Go you!

This is how successful your colony was
Calculate how many points you have left. The point range that you fall into is your score for how successful your colony was.
1pt: 1 week later you were attacked by Natives and your colony was burned to the ground
2pts-9pts: You were also attacked and most of your colony was destroyed. However, you were able to rebuild.
10pts.-15pts.: You led your colony for the rest of your life, which was just another 5 years after you were chosen as its leader. Nonetheless, you were able to get your colony established
16pts-20pts+: Your colony prospered and went down in history as one of the the most influential European colonies in History. It is because of your colony's success that America was able to become a powerful country.
