Common Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes

​Directions:

• Study each prefix, root, or suffix

• ​Each slide has an example of the root used inside a word, with a photo.

• ​On the next empty slide, place 3 additional words with that root. Include a short definition.

epi (upon, above, outer)

epicenter means the point where an earthquake is centered

​ambi, amphi (both)

​example: ambidexterous , able to write with both hands

​ante (earlier)

​example: antebellum means before the war... this style of Southern home was built before the Civil War

​anti (against)

​example: antibiotic means a substance against the germs

​astro (star)

​astrology - means the study of the stars

​auto (self)

​automobile means a vehicle you can drive by yourself.

​circum (around)

circumnavigation means to go around the globe on a ship​

​dia (through or across)

​diameter means the distrance across a circle
