Notes Values - Used to indicate how long a note should be played.

media

The whole note (also known as a semibreve) is held for 4 beats.

The half note (minim) is held for 2 beats.

The quarter note (crotchet) is held for 1 beat.

An eighth note (quaver) is held for 1/2 beat, while the sixteenth note (semiquaver) is held for 1/4 of a beat.

3

Note Values Chart

If a whole note is held for 4 beats

AND a half note is held for 2 beats, then:

1 Whole Note = 2 half notes

By this logic, we can create the note values chart, where:

1 Whole Note = 2 half notes = 4 quarter notes = 8 eighth notes = 16 sixteenth notes.

Note Values Chart

Using the mathematical patterns of the note value chart, we can also determine that:

1. There are 2 quarter notes in a half note.

2. There are 8 sixteenth notes in a half note.

3. There are 2 eighth notes in a quarter note.

... and so on and so forth!

Each note (sound) has an equal rest (silence).

For example: A whole note means sound is held for 4 beats. A whole REST means that SILENCE is held for 4 beats.
