If there are 12 beats in a measure, how many beats will a whole rest be?

Dotted Half Note

  • 3 beats of sound

  • The dot (by itself) equals HALF the number of beats of the note next to it

  • Then ADD the value of the dot with the value of the note to figure out the total number of beats

  • Half note = 2 beats

  • Dot = 1 beat (2 divided by 1 = 1)

  • 2+1=3

  • Therefore, dotted half-note = 3 beats

Eighth Note

  • When 2 eighth notes are next to each other, tie the "shoelaces" together

  • Counted as " 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +"
