​FUNCTIONS OF STEM

1. To hold the leaves so they can absorb sunlight

2. To carry / transport water from the roots to all parts of the plant

3. To carry / transport food from the leaves to all parts of the plant​

​What is inside the stem?

​XYLEM - carries water and minerals from the roots

​

​PHLOEM - carries food from the leaves

​FUNCTION OF THE LEAF

• ​The main function of the leaf is

• TO MAKE FOOD. The food is in the form of sugar.

​

• The process of making food in plants is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

​

• In order to make food, plants need :

(i) carbon dioxide gas from the air

(ii) water

(iii) sunlight

​What is photosynthesis?

The process of making food (sugar) in plants using carbon dioxide, water and sunlight.​

​Why is photosynthesis a very important process?

​Because during photosynthesis, OXYGEN gas is given out by the plants. Oxygen is needed for all living things to stay alive.

​

Carbon dioxide and ​oxygen gases enters and exits the leaves via the stomata.
