Use a comma after an introductory dependent clause.
Example: As the bell rang for first period, Miranda sauntered into class.
NOTE: I do not need a comma BEFORE a dependent clause!!!

Because we are under a severe thunderstorm warning I have decided to cancel our night class tonight.

Use commas to join two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction to create a compound sentence.
Example: Edgar Allan Poe wrote many pieces of literature, but his most well-known piece is probably "The Tell-Tale Heart."
NOTE: the coordinating conjunctions are: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
