​Use a comma after an introductory dependent clause.

​

​Example: As the bell rang for first period, Miranda sauntered into class.

​

​NOTE: I do not need a comma BEFORE a dependent clause!!!

​Correct the sentence below:

​Because we are under a severe thunderstorm warning I have decided to cancel our night class tonight.

​Use commas to join two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction to create a compound sentence.

​

​

​Example: Edgar Allan Poe wrote many pieces of literature, but his most well-known piece is probably "The Tell-Tale Heart."

​

​NOTE: the coordinating conjunctions are: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

​Correct the sentence below:

​In "The Tell-Tale Heart," the main character commits a heinous crime but he becomes overcome with guilt by the end of the story.

​Use commas to separate items in a series or a list.

​

​Example:

​

​Elizabeth ran across the parking lot, handed her mom the letter, ran back to the office, and gave Mrs. Megan her permission form.

​Rain is very important to our lives because it hydrates the soil waters the earth's plants and provides drinking water.
