​Use a comma after an introductory dependent clause.

​Example: As the bell rang for first period, Miranda sauntered into class.

​NOTE: I do not need a comma BEFORE a dependent clause!!!

​Use commas to join two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction to create a compound sentence.

​Example: Edgar Allan Poe wrote many pieces of literature, but his most well-known piece is probably "The Tell-Tale Heart."

​NOTE: the coordinating conjunctions are: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
