·         Dance accompanied ancient rituals, spiritual gatherings and social events

·  Dance became infused into our nature from the earliest moments of our existence

·  Dance during prehistoric time have not yet been fully recorded

·  First archeological proof of dance comes from the 9000 years old cave paintings in India

·  Dance during this era were chiefly medium of religious ceremonies

·  One of the earliest uses of structured dance was introduced in religious ceremonies that told the stories of ancient myths and Gods. Egyptian priest used this kind of visual storytelling in their rituals

· It is believed that the first people to dance were the Egyptians. Archaeologists discovered paintings of dancing figures in rock shelters and caves.

Ancient Greece and Rome

  • Dancing was taught as an aid to military education among boys in Athens and Sparta

  • Plato immensely gave importance to dance education. He highlighted the two kinds of dance and music: the noble ( fine and honorable) and the ignoble ( imitating what is mean or ugly)

  • Dance originated in ancient Rome as a religious practice

  • During Ancient Roman times, dancing was considered a form of entertainment.

  • Romulus founded Ancient Roman dance.

Ancient Greece and Rome

  • Romans also began to act out theatrical scenes through dancing, which was called pantomiming.

  •   Dances were often performed in the form of a line in which the leader of the line was the best dancer.

  • The Pyrrhic dance was introduced into the Roman Games by Julius Caesar. It was generally danced by children in the Dionysian style of dance.

  •   The two forms of dance are  court dance and country dance.

  • The types and styles of dance were becoming more complex and dances now focused on the mind with natural and pronounced movements

  •   Different dances were performed based on the audience, space and court dance was a form of entertainment that was later on performed as professional entertainment

    Modern Day

  • Tap dancing originated from African tribe dancing.

  • Today's dance style has taken a turn towards more hip hop dances

  • The first ever contemporary choreographer was Merce Cunningham

  • Hip hop dance made an entrance in the 1970’s. It originated from African tribe dances.

  • Funk dance is a form of hip hop and street style dance. This dance style consists of flexing your muscles to the beat often done with a joint locking technique.

Modern Day

  • The internet was responsible for many different surges in dance and the outside world. This created the ability to research, upload and view other people's dances from many different places.

  • Disco, Street Dance, Swing Dance and The Salsa were many new popular dances that could be done by anyone

  •   Elliot Feld, Alonzo King, Bebe Miller, Mark Morris and Bill T. Jones were all responsible for creating and contributing to the growth of the dance world at this time.
