What is listening?
"the psychological process of receiving, attending to constructing meaning from and responding to spoken and/or non-verbal messages" (Tyagi, 2013)
"the selective process of attending to, hearing, understanding, and remembering aural symbols." (Barker, 1971)

Passive listening
Listening obviously and carefully, showing attention
Genuinely interested in understanding the other person’s viewpoint
Assumes that what is heard and understood is correct but stay passive and do not verify it

Genuinely interested in understanding what the person is thinking, feeling, wanting or what the message means
Actively checking the understanding before responding with a new message
Restate or paraphrase the understanding of the message and reflect it back to the speaker for verification

Listen in order to react to what is listened to along content, cultural, and affective dimensions
Focus on the listener's responses to the input
Involves higher level listening skills with presumed comprehension

Attention is directed to planned tasks with specific purposes in mind
Focus on the main ideas or to extract information for certain details
