What are plants

Plants are one of six big groups (kingdoms) of living things.

They are autotrophic eukaryotes, which means they have complex cells, and make their own food.

Usually they cannot move (not counting growth).

Plants include familiar types such as trees, herbs, bushes, grasses, vines, ferns, mosses, and green algae.

Types of roots​

Fibrous Roots. Fibrous roots are found in monocot plants.

  • Taproots. Taproots are found in the majority of dicot plants.

  • Adventitious Roots. Adventitious roots are similar to the fibrous roots.

  • Creeping Roots.

  • Tuberous Roots.

  • Water Roots.

  • Parasite Roots.

​Herbs

An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties.

Herbal medicines are one type of dietary supplement.

They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants.

People use herbal medicines to try to maintain or improve their health.

​Shrubs

Shrub, any woody plant that has several stems, none dominant, and is usually less than 3 m (10 feet) tall.

When much-branched and dense, it may be called a bush.

Intermediate between shrubs and trees are arborescences, or treelike shrubs, from 3 to 6 m tall.

​Climbers

t is a woody shrub vine which climbs without clinging roots, tendrils, or thorns.

These may be divided into woody vines or lianas, such as wisteria, kiwifruit, and common ivy, and herbaceous (nonwoody) vines, such as morning glory.

One odd group of climbing plants is the fern genus Lygodium, called "climbing ferns".

​Trees

A tree is a tall plant with a trunk and branches made of wood. Trees can live for many years.

The four main parts of a tree are the roots, the trunk, the branches, and the leaves.

The roots of a tree are usually under the ground.

​Creepers

Creeping plants or "creepers" are generally considered to be small, viny plants that grow close to the ground.

They are also referred to as procumbent plants.

But most true creepers are smaller plants that seem to simply to crawl "on their bellies" along the ground, these usually make good ground covers
