A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought.

​Joe waited for the train.

​Mary and Samantha took the bus.

​Isha walked and looked around.

​A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you think of the words "FAN BOYS"

​ F- for A- and N- nor B- but O-or Y- yet S-so

​Joe waited for the train, but the train was late.

​I looked for Mary and Samantha at the bus station, but they arrived at the station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived.

​Should we start class now, or wait for everyone to get here?

1. I think you'd enjoy the party, but I don't mind if you stay home.

2. He went to the party, but she stayed home.

3. He said he didn't mind if I stayed home, but it soon became clear he wasn't being honest.

4.He couldn't go home, for he had no place to go. 

5.She owned a car, yet she didn't know how to drive it.

6.I went to the beach.

7.I will shop at the store this weekend.

8.He read many books.

9.I eat pineapple.

10.We jump at the street.
