​Spanish Double Surnames

​Spanish persons usually use the surnames of both parents. This double surname is derived from the first surname of the father and the first surname of the mother. The surname of the father comes before the surname of the mother. So for example if Mrs. Marquez' surname before marriage before marriage was Gomez the children's surnames would be Marquez Gomez. Therefore Eduardo's name would be Eduardo Marquez Gomez.

Masculine and Feminine

​You need to know that ALL nouns in Spanish are either masculine or feminine.

• ​Most words that end in o are masculine.

• ​Most words that end in a are feminine.

• ​The word the is el for masculine nouns and la for feminine nouns.

​Final Note

​In Spanish there is no apostrophe as in English.

​

• In order to say Eduardo's sister you say la hermana de Eduardo.

• To say Carmen's brother you say el hermano de Carmen.
