In other words...

Backward Mapping/Design

Teachers' planning can be done on several levels, such as a year, a term, a week, a unit, and a day.

Planning helps teachers become familiar with the core curriculum and organize the delivery sequence.

In their book

Understanding By Design,

Wiggins and Mc Tighe (2005) demonstrate the design of one single classroom lesson using the WHERETO mnemonic. As the term indicates, teachers are encouraged to think about the direction in which the students will head after completing the lesson. Again, the teachers is asked to begin with the end in mind.

Planning with the big picture in mind

The planning process begins with a concept based on the curriculum, which encourages deeper understanding and learning.

What do you think about this picture? Does it match with the standard I'm presenting today?

My interpretation...

Standard 7 is about planning for instruction, which helps me understand the significance of helping all my students meet their learning goals through strategic planning and instruction. I must be organized and use content knowledge, curriculum, integrative strategies, and pedagogy to develop each lesson.  I must also consider my students’ backgrounds, and how they learn in order to create the most effective and meaningful instruction possible.

15

It’s essential to choose different instructional strategies, incorporate technology, consider students' differences, provide accommodations and modifications to meet all students' needs/styles, and use different approaches to assess students.

My interpretation (continued)...

16

Most importantly, reflecting on lesson plans is also a part of planning; teachers evaluate their lesson plans and apply changes to them as needed for future use.

Guiding question #1

Does the candidate draw upon the knowledge of appropriate instructional strategies and technological tools to plan instruction that supports each student in meeting rigorous learning goals?

Guiding question #2

What is it like in the classroom?

  • Use the Bloom taxonomy to scaffold instruction and sets realistic objectives and goals for the developmental stage

  • Use pre-assessment, daily formative assessments, and summative assessment to evaluate student's knowledge and plan instruction

  • Create a system to collect and analyze data to assess students knowledge and adjust future instruction

  • Use different strategies and technology toolsto assess students knowledge, teach concepts and meet the needs of all students in the classroom

  • Use of homogeneous or heterogeneous grouping to differentiate instruction, working stations, and modification of activities and assessments based on student's ability level.

  • Implement appropriate sequencing of learning experiences that help students learn at high levels
