What happens when we run out of lines and spaces on the staff but still want to go higher or lower?​

You add miniature staff extenders called leger lines! These are short lines added above or below the staff. Notes can be put on these lines or in the spaces between them.​

This note is one leger line up from the staff.

This one is two lines above.​

​

​This note is one space above the staff.

​

​

​

​This one is two spaces above.

​

​This note is one leger line BELOW the staff.

​

​

​

​This one is two lines below.

​This note is one space below the staff.
