Parentheses

When solving problems using order of operations you start with:

PARENTHESES

(4x5)+3x3-52

Step 1 (4x5=20)+3x3-52

Step 2 20+3x3-52

Step 1: Solve the problems in the parentheses. What is 4x5? 20!

Step 2: Bring down the equation with 20 in place of the parentheses!

4

Exponent

Once you are finished with parentheses, the next step is to solve any exponents. Remember exponents look like this x2 .

20+3x3-52

Step 3- 20+3x3-52 (52 =5x5=25)

Step 4- 20+3x3-25

Step 3- Solve the exponent. What is 52 or 5x5? 25! Step 4- Bring everything down.

5

Multiply/Divide

When you are solving a problem using order of operations, multiplication and division is done in a particular order. You solve, whichever comes first, from LEFT to RIGHT.

20+3x3-25

Step 5- 3x3=9

Step 6-20+9-25

Step 5- Multiply- what is 3x3? 9! Step 6- Bring down.

6

Add/Subtract

When you are left with addition and subtraction, it is important for you to remember to solve it from LEFT to RIGHT.

20+9-25

Step 7- 20+9=29

Step 8- 29-25

Step 9- 29-25=4

Step 10- 4

Step 7 allows you to solve the addition portion. Step 8- bring down. Step 9 allows you to subtract. Step 10- write your final answer.

Frequently Asked Questions?

1. Can I Add before I multiply? NO, you have to follow the order- parentheses, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract.

2. Where can I see a video for additional practice? I love Math Antics! You can try searching Math Antics-Order of Operations on YouTube.

3. I still can't get it, why can't I get it? Practice makes perfect! Do not give up, keep practicing and ask for help when needed. YOU GOT THIS!
