Does the shape of a transparent/translucent object affect the way light is passed through it?

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1

Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

What Does It Mean?

Students should be able to describe the physical properties of specific shapes while distinguishing between defining and non-defining attributes. For example, the color of the shape is a non-defining attribute, as it does not change the overall composition of the shape. However, the number of sides is a defining attribute, as the specific amount of sides a shape has does not change. Students will also be able to identify, build, and draw shapes based on their definite composition. Using these shapes, students will explore the idea of how the shape of an transparent/ translucent object affects the way light passes through it.
